Asylumia is a country in the South Pacific noteworthy for it's population consisting entirely of the mentally ill and the descendants therein.

[edit] Origin

Before the American Civil War, an American schoolteacher by the name of Dorothea Dix began teaching Sunday school in prisons in her local area. In the prisons, she discovered many mentally ill persons and was abhorred by their cruel and unusual mistreatment. She then travelled to many different prisons and further discovered even more cruelly and unusually mistreated lunatics. Afterwards, she appealed to the United States' government and demanded a reform in their treatment. Rather than spending an unnecessarily large amount of money, they rounded up all of the mentally ill, stuffed them into a giant bathtub, and sent them off on their way. Many of the denizens of Asylumia are or were members of the Lunch Lady's Society.

Though records at this time were sketchy at best, they eventually landed on a large island. The self-proclaimed leader of the assorted madmen, Lunatix, proclaimed this new land as Asylumia. He then fell madly in love with the natives, creatures who called themselves corn puppies.

[edit] Geography

Asylumia predominantly features a tropical climate, and is mostly flat. The curiously level landscape has led some Asylumians to believe they live on a large, fertile sandbox.

[edit] 'The Government'

Asylumia can be loosely classified as a theocracy - whereas all citizens unwaveringly believe and fear an omniscient, observing, and judging deity known as 'The Government'. 'The Government', Asylumians believe, secretly controls the entire world and perpetually watches every man, woman, and child, through use of laser satellites, flourinated tapwater, radio waves, orthodontics, cell phones, computers, television, hub caps, real estate agents, ear piercings, mechanical pencils, telephones, Meow-Mix Clocks, molars, and secret moon bases, cataloging them and tracking them at all times. The Asylumians follow an unwritten code of laws in an attempt to not attract unwanted attention from 'The Government'. It is through this unceasing dread that order was rapidly extablished through the settlers, and still keeps today's Asylumian population from descending into a state of total anarchy.

While nearly all citizens fear 'The Government', many pray to it for help in many occasions. Natural disasters, unnatural disasters, and any other event which makes life anywhere between a living hell and a minor nuisance is constantly made known to 'The Government' in hope that it will grant them deliverance from their troubles, which it will from time to time.

It is important to note that many people absolutely hate 'The Government', to the point where they go out in the streets and protest it's very existence. Oddly, many of these people who protest 'The Government' are the ones who benefit the most from it's blessings.
