The Australian Civil War is a prominent war in Australian history. It was fought between The Republican States of Australia and the Monarchist States of Australia. The War began in 1865, when Queensland wanted to separate Australia from the British Empire, due to close ties with Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria followed suit. New South Wales was against this and threatened military action. Which was unpleasnt for the Lower classes which were conscripted into miliatry service. South Australia, who was just a New South Wales puppet state also decided to go along with them. Britian provide the Monarchist States with weapons and uniforms, While the United States provide munitions and uniforms for the Republican states. Tasmania also joined The Monarchist, however New South Wales told them to back down as South Australia wanted the Tasmanian oil feilds through war but now Tasmania was an ally. However South Australia allowed Tasmania into the alliance only if they promised to give them rich oil. New Zealand was eventually brought into the conflict because of the British dominance in New Zealand and realised that a Independant Australia was against there interests and so the New Zealanders joined the Monarchists.

[edit] Southern Front 1766-1769

New South Wales

New South Wales had a plan called Operation Overload here they would quickly defeat Victoria before Queenslands more powerful but geographically streched army could mobilise. This plan was later used by the Germans in world war 1. The New Soth Welshman invaded and attacked Victoria. The Queenslanders began to Moblise there impressive army. The New South Welshmen began marching throught The Great Dividing Range. The Victorians saw this and immediatly called for help from Queensland and Western Australia. New South Wales sent almost 25,000 infantr and 5,000 cavalry into Victoria. The Victorians had roughly just 15,000 infantry on hand on the defence. Historians say that the Victorians had the advantage though as they had knowledge of the terrian and the passage throught the Great dividing Range. The Battle that followed was harsh and the Victorian Division was defeated the New South Welshmen continued onto Melbourne where they eventually took in the great Melbourne siege of 1869. What was left of the Victorians were taken into Concentration camps were they were questions as to why they abandoned the Crown.

[edit] Tasmanian Inter-Wars March-March 1866

While fighting was goin on the Victorian New South Wales border the Tasmanians wanted some of the glory for Defeating Victoria and sent almost there entire army 30,000 men into Victoria. Victoria was demorialed but could still muster 20,000 men to battle the Tasmanians. The Tasmanians weren't well equipet and soon suffered a great defeat. Some say this is why Tasmania isn't included in Australia.

[edit] Western Australian vs South Australian Bush war War April 1866

In early April Western Australian Forces desperate to liberate Victoria sent a massive invasion of 100,000 troops. New Zealand sent an army of 18,000 and mustered an Papuan army of 1,000 and sent them to The South Australian-Western Australian border. South Australia itself managed to Muster 70,000 because of the great famine of the 19th century thats all South Australia could muster. However South Australia received New Zealander and Papuan reinforcements. South Australia had better Generals and equipment and knowledge of the local deserts. While the Western Australians believed they could foolishly march across the desert and surpirise the Southerners. The front was one of the most bloodiest of the wars with Western Australian and South Australia frequently calling ceasefires as the casualties on both sides were great. The Papuans were massicured the majority of Papuans who fought died. New South Wales and Queensland were unable to help there allies as both were in greater conflict with each other. After a long and bloody war the Western Australians finally surrendered in 1870, Causing Queensland to be the only Republican state left in the fight.

[edit] Northern Front-

The battle of Cronulla.
The battle of Cronulla.

The Norther front is the most vilent battle that the civil war produced as nearly 700,000 men took part. Queensland seeing that Victoria was under attack from New South Wales decided to advance into New South Wales territory and sent a massive invasion force of 300,000 men. New South Wales was stuned by this move and immediatly enforced consription which mustered around 350,000 men New South Wales was even forced to move the occupational force out of Victoria instead replacing them with Papuan and Tasmainian forces. New South Wale squickly gather this mass of an army and marched just into the Queensland border and the two armies meet at Stanthorpe. The battle that followed was firce and the Queenslanders were defeated in a mass battle the New South Welshmen had prevailed. The remanider of the Queensland army fel to Brisbane and gathered there. New South Wales had captured a large amount of Queenslanders and took them in as POWS. The New South Welshmen soon learned that Queensland was not yet finished and that an army of 100,000 troops were gathering at Brisbane. So on 11th of September the New South Welshmen marched up towards Brisbane and besieged New South Wales outnumbered the Queenslanders by 3 to 1. This battle became known as the battle of Brisbane.

[edit] Papuan Front

In early 1867 Papuan forces joined the war on the side of the Monarchists. Before they could launch an attack on Queensland Republican forces invaded New Guinea. Their advance halted along the Kokoda Track where thousands of Papuans forces ambushed them. Luckily for the Republicans the Papuans were only armed with simple weapons and were easily defeated despite outnumbering them 10 to 1. This victory was later commemerated in the song And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda. The Papuans left the war, humiliated, not long after. As the battle has gone down in Papuan hisotry as a humiliating defeat but gone down in Australian history as a brilliant Agincourt-like triumph it is still a cause of tension in Australian-Papuan relations today and is highlighted by the fact that the Papuan campgin was of little significance to Australia during the civil war.

[edit] Aftermath of the Civil War

The Monarchists States won the war and quickly renstated the King of Australia Kerry O'Brien as Australia's Monarch. The rule of O'Brien didn't last long as he lost support from the British empire and Australia soon became a federation. South Australia never recovered from the famine and has become Australia's driest state. New Zealand was asked to be in the federation but refused. As a result of the conflict a State of Origin Rubgy League match is held ever year to honour the Queenslander and New South Welshmen that died in the battle. Queensland has become the most powerful state in Australia with it's population about to reach 42,333,000 and has the largest income per capitia. A republican debates are still currently held in Australia although less violent.
