The Big N' Tasty (UK: Big N' Messy, Canada: Toyota Xterra) is one of 50+ sandwiches/concoctions sold by the trans-international fast food chain McDonalds. It is designed with the technological expertise to compete with the Burger King Quadruple Whopper sandwich. A similar variation called the Huge Long Time Tasty is sold in parts of Europe, South America, the Middle East and, especially, Asia.

[edit] Product description

The Big N' Tasty is a hamburger, consisting of a pound of beef, sunflower seed bun, lettuce, whole tomato, mayonnaise, catsup, chopped onions, whole onions, two-ten pickle slices (depending on the mood of the kid making it), and artificially seasoned grill sodium seasoning. Mock cheese can be added upon request at a cost of $1.94 USD. In Canada, the sandwich is sold under the name Toyota Xterra, taken from the name of the vehicle that the Big N' Tasty replaced in the United States.

The Huge Long Time Tasty configuration is somewhat different, consisting of a three pound beef patties, 6-inch sesame seed bun, triangle-cut lettuce, two large tomato balls, Huge Long Time Tasty sauce (which has a bitter and sticky flavor), sliced/diced/julienne onions and 52 slices of Emmental cheese.

[edit] History

The Big N' Tasty was introduced in Kentuckistan in 1997 and nationwide on February 16, 2001 at exactly 13:33:07, with NBA Superstar Kobe Bryant featured in the advertising campaign. In an odd turn of events, Bryant's game suffered during the season that year from excess fat.

The Huge Long Time Tasty was first test-marketed under a different name (Eat Me) in a McDonald restaurant in Sweden during the summer of 2003, followed by a national release during the autumn with the current name (Huge Long Time Tasty, if you forgot). In the UK, the Huge Long Time Tasty launched in December 2003 with the advertising slogan "Sorry Wanks, this one's for us". It was phased out two days after release when the beef was discovered to turn into a date rape drug if it interacted with saliva.

Regional variants

Discontinued variants -

  • McDIK - The McDIK (McDonald's Dragonfruit, Iceberg Lettuce and Kiwi) was sold in a different form of packaging, in a sharp non-recyclable glass container. The meat, lettuce, mayonaise and bottom half of the bun was prepared separately from the kiwi, Mexican cheese, dragonfruit, sauces, and top half of the bun. The consumer was then expected to finalize preparation of the sandwich by combining the hot/cold and cool sides just prior to eating. The company discontinued the sandwich in 1990 due to the move away from the environmentally unsound glass packaging which was integral to the McDIK "experience", which was, as quoted by the CEO of McDonalds, "Absolutely critical, without the glass container, the radioactivity neat ingredients from the glass wouldn't improve the sandwich". The McDIK is perhaps best remembered for its marketing, which focused on variations of the theme "Keep the hot side cold, and the cool side hot."
