British Indian Ocean Territory
From Uncyclopedia, the content-free encyclopedia.
The British Indian Ocean Territory is a territory in the Indian Ocean owned by the British (obviously). Americans also live on the islands, and as do Indians, but strangely enough, American Indians don't. The best island is used by the Americans for their war of terror, and as a military base.
[edit] A Short History of the Islands
The British Indian Ocean Territory has a short history. Vasco da Gama, who found the islands in the 1500's, claimed it for France, and the islands merely became an extension of Mauritius, also owned by France. In 1810, however, France surrendered the islands to Britain after Britain threatened France with a menacing looking fist shake.
The islands, now belonging to the British, were immediately populated by peasant farmers. The farmers soon found that nothing grew, because the soil was crap (literately, the soil was copra, which is fossilized bird crap). Copra, however, was worth more money than the farmers would make out of growing crops. As a result, the farmers soon got rich. Now, in 1965, the islands were expanded. That is to say, a couple islands off Seychelles were given to the territory, and a couple off Mauritius. Mind you, the island group was not called "British Indian Ocean Territory" until then. Before, it was just called "Chagos Archipelago", but the British Government changed it because people didn't know how to spell the word "Archipelago". The British government, now having a greater sense of power, banished all the farmers and natives off the best island, and onto Mauritius.
They did this so that they could build their Military Base. The purpose of the base was apparently, believe it or not, built to "counter any Soviet threat in the region" (that's straight from wikipedia). But the location of the base would only ever be useful if Soviet Russia were to attack Antarctica. Strangely enough, there have never been reports of Russia attacking Antarctica. In 1976, a couple of islands were returned to Seychelles, yadda yadda, and later on, the exported natives of the islands sued the British Government for moving them to a diffent, bigger, richer island group, and they won. And that's the complete, unabridged true history of the British Indian Ocean Territory.
