[edit] Literary analysis
The author of the above statement shows clear Joycean influences, especially in his intelligent use of the 'stream of consciousness', a device whereby the author foregoes the use of traditional storytelling, punctuation, and coherence to attempt to indicate to the audience a greater truth. This shows the audience exactly what is in the character's mind, and is particularly applicable in the above case, where it becomes clear that the author is, in an ironically literal sense, full of shit.
There are also hidden messages in his work, in a similar way to Shakespeare's famous 'secret insult', whereby the first letters of the names of all the main characters in his plays, put together, make up the phrase, 'YOUR MOM IS GAY'. (Incidentally, that is convincing evidence that Shakespeare was a secret IRC addict.) This may not be readily apparent to the casual viewer, but the writing is not simply made up of the phrase, 'cunt cunt cunt cunt crap crap shit'. Upon shifting to the editing view it is clear that the writer intended these to be on different lines; the fact that they are run together is both symbolic of the way in which life in the modern world is indistinguishable from death, and indicative of the fact that whoever wrote it is incapable of tying his shoelaces without dribbling. There are two three FOUR hidden phrases: 'milky discharge', 'Barbra Streisand' and 'Celine Dion'. The fourth hidden phrase is very well hidden indeed. I didn't find it. Did you? Why the author chose to make two references to cows is unknown. Other secret words include 'semprini' and 'Belgium', which are no longer secret.
Notice also how the word 'crap' is repeated multiple times throughout this text. The naïve may question this, saying 'once, surely, would be enough? That would have got the point across so the purpose of the page could be returned to (i.e. repeating the word 'cunt')'. This however misses out one important influence. There is a lot of crap on this page. And repeating the word 'crap' is a cue for the reader to be sub-consciously reminded just how much shit there actually is on this page. The sheer repetition of the word crap also serves to highlight the very heart of the author's embittered soul, and enables the reader to see the way in which the author has counterpointed the surrealism of the underlying metaphor (Good work, Arthur, we might yet get out of this one alive!). It also shows the tinge of a Buddhist koan, a mantra in which one clears one's own mind of all sufferings by repeating, in his or her mind, dirty words and profanities. In short, the very words of anger are submitted to peace, like a sword being beaten into a plowshare, thus furthering the metaphor.
