I've always wanted to be Milli Vanilli

~ Oscar Wilde on Dubbing

Some cultures, like in Europe and Japan, have the weird concept of overdubbing a movie or film voice with one in there own language. This disorders tends to vary in severity depending on the country. For instance the netherlands tends only to overdub children's films. The germans , on the other hand, seem to be totaly unable to understand the simplest english sentence imaginable. Germany dubbs everything. Every movie or series in germany uses the same voice actors so all people sound the same in the german movies. A true ubermenschligesch gedanken fur das uberfolk nicht ?!.

Anyway, this information isn't so freightfully interesting. Infact it's indeed fucking useless. But thats not the point. This article is designed to be a up-to-date file of annomalies that accompany movie dubbing ( with special care for german dubbing, ofcource ! ) In order to , when completed, present the sillyness of dubbing to the countries that practice it.

Hopefully this effort from our part will educate some countries in understanding that foreign languages are NOT unermenschlig and that acctually learning a new language, or for that matter learning to read ( subtitles ), isn't a bad thing.

[edit] Mistakes and sillyness due to dubbing

How do joke translations totaly wreck a movie . What words come out wrong . How can anybody watch this ?

[edit] Example

1. Knock Knock joke in german.

Original.

Knock, Knock.
Who's there ?
Dishes.
Dishes who ?
Dishes the police , open up .

German Dubbed version.

Klopf klopf.
Wie is das ?
Teller.
Teller wie den ?
Teller DIE POLIZEI, AUFMACHEN.

2. The irritating way some english is mixed with german.

From some film : Daddy daddy , Don't go, there is a lot of danger.
In german ( With thick accent : Daddy daddy , nicht gehn, Dort is feel danger, jah !.
Yet they bother dubbing/translating the succinct idea of a "power nap" literally ("Verkräftigungsnickerchen").

[edit] Stupid movie titles

Goes without saying that every dubbed movie needed a dubbed title. Post brainfart movie dubs here.

[edit] Titles

  • Terminator II Judgement day - Terminator II - Tag der Abrechnung.
  • Die Hard with a Vengeance - Würfel stark mit einem Vengeance

[edit] Mistakes and sillyness

[edit] Germany

The people who dubbed the American film "Gone with the Wind" into German decided, for the sake of accuracy, to sample a line from the American film, translate it into German, and then translate it back. When transferred to German and then back, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" became "Bite the wax tadpole."
