I think we all know why this show is so popular: space hookers.

I strongly resent this tasteless use of my name, and so do my ancestors. Why, my ancestors would rise from their graves. I'd only have to bury them again!

Firefly is an imaginary science fiction television show, an urban legend started as a joke by Keith Chegwin. The idea was to create a fictitious show which people could claim to have watched and be fans of, and discuss at conventions to annoy sci-fi fans who like to think they know every detail about every science fiction show ever. Of course the show has never existed.

The mythical story of the show is that the guys from "Bonanza" are abducted by aliens and start having adventures in cowboy space.

Many people believe they have seen episodes of this show, but this is a trick of the mind; when something is discussed repeatedly, eventually the brain begins to fill in gaps to explain the inconsistencies created by the confusion. This is the Derren Brown effect, named after Paul McKenna's imaginary budgerigar. This confusion is made worse by a spoof sketch made by the creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", Anne Rice. She made the sketch for Comedy Channel and it is infrequently shown in commercial breaks, tricking channel-hoppers into thinking they are viewing a real show. The sketch is often expanded with stock footage of Space, clips from other sci-fi shows, and re-run scenes from Bonanza and Dawson's Creek.

So successful was the prank, that many sci-fi fans are convinced that they have seen the show, and that it was cancelled in favour of a new series of "ready, steady, cook". Keith Chegwin is reported to be pissing himself over this on a near daily basis (hence the sobriquet for fans of the show: "Brownpants"). Deranged "fans" of the supposed show have started a campaign to raise fundementals of nees to make a new series. So far over $85 has been raised, which campaign coordinator Alvin Stardust has reported to have spent on a DVD box set of "Dr Who". A bounty in excess of $7 has been placed on the life of the rogue Stardust by the deluded fans. Rumors have also spread that Steve Ballmer has vowed to Fucking Kill™ Alvin Stardust.

With the urban legend reaching unknown heights of popularity, a "follow-up" movie was created. This movie, Serenity, uses a different method of mind manipulation from the television "episodes". Adopting an idea formulated by the great Elvis Presley, a single shot of Morena Baccarin is used in tandem with subliminal advertising. The human brain fills in the rest using the Hallucinatory Effects of Popcorn Consumption. This style, dubbed "motionless picture", creates the illusion of the viewer having witnessed a great event in cinematic history. It should also be noted that the release of the film has only increased the legend of Firefly sevenfold.

Serenity was so successful that another film was made about the characters from "Firefly", only this time set in the universe of the Alien films. It was entitled Alien: Resurrection.

It must also be mentioned that the show's "creator", Joss Whedon, still believes that he actually filmed it.

"Just keep in mind that the space hookers aren't men...."
