Geological survey

The Geological Survey is the process of obtaining information about geologist's favourite rocks and earth science subjects (excluding geography). The term is mostly used in connection with chartered geologists, self-learned petroleum geologists and anybody awarded with a BSc in Geology or higher. It is recommended that the survey is to be taken every 5 years according to both USGS and BGS recommendations and the last formal survey was carried out in 2005.

The full results of the geological survey can be found at either of the USGS or BGS websites although some of the main and interesting features of the report are noted below;
- 88% of geologists are male, 11.5% are female and the remaining 0.5% of geologists that were surveyed were unsure of their own sex.
- 24% of geologists questioned thought that hermaphrodite was a mineral classification group.
- Only 13% could pronounce Molybdenum correctly.
- 0% of American geologists could pronounce Aluminium correctly compared with 97% in the UK.
- 8 out of 10 geologists had used a geological hammer in some way during the last 24 hours
- All geologists questioned had owned an ammonite at some point in their lives.
- 72% thought that oil comes out the ground black.
- 98% of geographers wished the had changed to geology during university.
- 92% of geologists refused to take the geological survey.
- 1% of geologists thought that the geological survey was of any benefit to the scientific community.
