[edit] Basketball Career
George Gervin was recruited out of high school to play for the Harlem Globetrotters. He put up stellar numbers before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs for Curley Joe Johnson and a box of cornbread mix (pronounced cone-bread mix). While on the Spurs Gervin invented the slam dunk. A feat quite easily achieved by him due to his low body mass index which hovered somewhere around 1.8 (Gervin was 6'7" tall and weighed 46 pounds). On a day when the air conditioning was turned up in the HemisFair Arena, Gervin could dunk from just inside half court. The chilly atmosphere that was the result of these AC gusts earned him the nickname "The Iceman".[edit] Awards
- 7 NBA scoring titles
- 4 ABA scoring titles
- 1971 Harlem Globetrotters' least likely to succeed
- 2 league MVPs
- 1993 Academy Award winner for best supporting actress
[edit] Soccer Career
Gervin finished his professional sports career on the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League just like everyone else in the 70s.
[edit] Feud with Julius Erving
When Julius Erving bested Gervin in the 1976 All-Star game, Gervin told reporters he would bare-knuckle box Erving on the roof of the Pontiac Silverdome. Dr. J respectively declined saying, "Nigga can stick it up his ass." To which Gervin responded, "I stuck it up your mom's ass last night."
