Janet Weiss is a character in the bold, daring period opera The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The role is usually sung by a Soubrette Soprano with versatile technique and a good pair of lungs and lung covers.
[edit] Role History
R. Obrauss, the composer and creator of the famous opera, discusses the formation of the 'Janet Weiss' role in one of his memoirs, dated January 11, 1854:
- While I was not prepared for it, my research has presented with a conundrum, of which I am most certainly surprise, as insofar I hadn't met one in person. This conundrum came to me in the form of a big-breasted, half-brained and squeaky woman, who is drawn into the hands of the perfect man: Strong, silent, and naked.
The character was based on early German legends, where the well known Weiskeeres have fed the imagination for centuries. These wild sluts were not to be tamed, and any attempt made to write a legend in which theu were, resulted in the Grimm death of the write (reference to The Grimm Brothers in the last sentence is purely coincidental).
[edit] Famous Singers who have taken the role
- Maria Callas--noted for originating the role at La Scala
- Mariah Carrey
- Drew Carey
- Susan Sarandon
- The Cast Slut
[edit] Vocal features
The vocal range needed for the role is enormous, ranging from a low "Ooo" up to and including a dangerously high "Eeeeeeeeee". The singer could also be able to sing upright, standing, lying in bed, and with her legs up in the air. However, the mastery of words is not required.
