The hollow corpses of beautiful people that have been killed by the government for tests involving rockets and shoes. These are then sold to stores to be dressed up as 'stylish' people.

The first Mannequins appeared in the 30's when the government decided that their usual human test subjects just weren't good enough, so they hired a group of assassins called "The Fishermen" to kill as many beautiful people as they could manage. After the fishermen would kill a subject, they would bring the corpse in a large plastic bag (The company that made the bags would later be known as ZipLoc) to a secret location in the mojave desert where military surgeons would test the bodies rigorously, and eventually hollow out the insides of the body after the tests. After the body was hollowed out, it would usually be run through a machine dubbed the Jade Machine, which would make the skin of the hollowed corpse almost plastic like.

These hollowed-out and plastic like corpses would be sold to department stores like Mongomery Wards', J.C. Penny's, and Macy's.

Today, some mannequins are synthetic, however a large amount of mannequins in circulation did, at one time, live.

A few Mannequins (called Autons) are extraterrestrial in nature, and are used as weapons by a gestalt intelligence from another planet. Many Autons conceal hidden weapons, and a few have a voice box to negotiate with (and to explain their plans until The Doctor can figure a way to stop them).

The production of synthetic mannenequins is now a monopoly business of Eritrea, which produces 99% of the world's mannequins. The other 1% are of holy statutettes of saints produced in Vatican City.
