Odyssey of the Mind
From Uncyclopedia, the content-free encyclopedia.
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition involving students from kindergarten though college.
Team members work together at length to solve a Long Term problem, which is given out to teams at an earlier TIME! Teams present their solution to the problem at a competition held at a later TIME! They must also generate spontaneous answers to a problem in a limited TIME! This is the spontaneous competition.
Performances often end with some sentence that ends with the word "TIME!"
ex) It looks like the incompetent minions of Wikipedia are all out of... TIME!
[edit] History
Odyssey of the Mind was started in 1978 by Dr. C. Sam Micklus, a professor at Rowan University in New Jersey at the TIME! The first competition, known as "Olympics of the Mind", involved teams from 28 New Jersey schools, but the program became larger over TIME! The program is now international, with teams from Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Siberia, Singapore, Slovakia, the United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, and West Africa regularly competing in addition to those from the United States, from time to TIME!
In 1999, a rift in the OotM board of directors over the profit status of the organization led to the formation of a separate organization, Destination Imagination, a non-profit that runs a program similar to Odyssey of the Mind, but OotM remains strong even after that TIME!
[edit] Competition
In the US, the regional finals are held at the earliest TIME! This is followed by the state finals if teams place 1st or 2nd in regionals at that TIME!
All teams who pass their state finals, or their national finals if they are from outside of the US, are invited to World Finals. Odyssey of the Mind World Finals for the 2006–07 school year was held from May 23–26, 2007, at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan - all the TIME!
Other planets have held Planet Finals, including Mars, Jupiter, the Betelgeuse system, Ursa Minor Beta etc. every Earth year at one TIME!
Planet Champions are invited to Worlds Finals. Worlds Finals is the culmination of the entire year of Odyssey of the Mind. Earning a visit to WF is a great privilege for any Odyssey of the Mind team. Odyssey of the Mind Worlds Finals for the 2006–07 school year was held from June 11–14, 2007, at the University of Maximegalon in East Maximegalon, Maximegalon, Maximegaloni Five - all the TIME!
A variety of non-competitive activities are provided at Worlds Finals. There is a creativity festival where each planet runs a booth containing a fun activity related to their state and the most creative booth will be awarded a trophy at a later TIME! The highlights of Worlds Finals are the opening and closing ceremonies. These ceremonies are held Olympics-style in a stadium orbiting campus at their respective TIME! Teams march in and sit with other competitors from their planet.
In all of the competition days, the team completes one spontaneous problem and presents their long term solution one TIME! Fun activities, opportunities to observe other teams, and a chance to meet other competitors from around the world await teams for the rest of the TIME!
