[edit] History Of The Palm
The palmtop was originally created to fulfill a demand by the part of businesses for the mobile office, whereby work could be taken on the road. The first attempt to fill this niche came in the original two-colour palmtop, codenamed "Labrador". The Labrador came standard with a screen capable of displaying a up to one character at a time, in any one of its available colour. The Labrador though came under harsh criticism as a result of the single character display due to the time taken to read a word, much less a document. Furthermore, the stability of the supplied software caused criticism, due to its tendency to crash. This in itself was not a huge issue, however what complicated matters was the fact it was impossible to tell if the Labrador had crashed, or if the user was simply viewing a long line of spaces.
[edit] Evolution of the Palmtop
After the critical and commercial failure of the original Palmtop, a new model, codenamed "Poodle" was produced. This boasted a screen capable of displaying multiple lines of text. However, due to the fact that technology had not significantly advanced, this merely resulted in a massive expansion of the screen size.
After Palm failed to sell many of the original manufacture run of the poodle, the poodles found a new lease on life as surfboards.
[edit] Eventual Success
Undeterred, the palmtop continued in its evolution, eventually metamorphosing into the incarnation we see today. While still effectively useless for all intents and purposes, Palm inc. realised that what was holding them back was the ridiculous naming pattern. As such, the still useless Palm T|X has sold well, despite being arguably less functional than the Palm Poodle, as they have ditched the canine connection. It may also have a connection to the tiny motors installed in the newer models for added comfort for you and your partner.
