“I do, of course, take it for granted that I will receive my payment in form of a peg leg, captain?”
~ Captain Kidd on planning to become a pirate
“DON"T GIVE US ONE!!!”
~ Dogs on Peg Legs
“To be or to not be; that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in mind to have your leg chopped off than chopping someone else's leg off...”
~ Shakespeare on early versions of Hamlet, which were later rejected
A peg leg is a wooden leg, sometimes ending in a shoe, but most commonly, in a huge wooden lump made entirely to make a characteristic "clomping" sound.
Most wearers of peg legs consider it derogatory to be called "peg-legger," and in in Uzbekistan as well as Sweden, to call a pirate "peg-legger" is considered rasistic and punished with the hard labour of carving more peg legs.
[edit] Peg Legs in Pop Culture
Peg leg is an important feature in full pirate regalia, and, though not recognized as such, in fact a separate piece of clothing. The decline of the peg leg in use is often not blamed on more modern prothesis technology, but rather the declining number of pirates. It can be considered something of a fashion statement among younger people today (especially in the Caribbean) to use peg legs, in order to pay respect to their great ancestors.
Contrary to popular beliefs, peg legs are not used to replace a missing leg. It is as much a statement as piercing one's ears. Some modern-day musicians are known to use the peg leg in order to gain popularity. Famous examples of modern-day musicians wearing peg legs include the litle known Elven rock band "B-Beard."
Many religious groups oppose the peg leg. The Intelligent Design movement states a peg leg as ungodly, saying that:
| If God intended mankind to have wooden legs, he would have made all humans from wood. |
| Aye, me Father was a tree. |
[edit] Pegs in History
Not all people often nominated as pirates use peg legs; for example, no viking has ever been known to wear a peg leg. However, in the glory days of piracy, the peg leg was popular with most pirates, some of them wearing not only one but two or three at a time.
Many modern companies produce peg legs as a regular product, aiming mostly for the Caribbean markets. Some famous peg leg producers include Long John's, Pirates-R-Us and McArrrgh. However, both Pirates-R-Us and McArrrgh are also great producers of hooks and eyepatches; this has helped both companies to remain afloat during the financial hardships.
[edit] Trivia
Originally, the James Bond movie "Goldfinger" was intended to be called "Woodleg," featuring Auric Woodleg as the main villain. George Lucas also had an idea early during the production of "The Empire Strikes Back" that Darth Vader was supposed to cut Luke's leg off, instead of his hand. This lost leg would then be replaced by a neo-peg-leg.
Currently, all peg legs, and peg like appendages are Banned From China.
