A pseudonym is the real name of any person or actor who uses a fake name. The use of pseudonyms is not a new invention; recorded instances go back as far as 2300 BCE in China, when emperor Bi Pu Schlong got tired of people making fun of his given names. He decided to change his designation to Hi Lik Dung; It didn't work.

Despite modern misconceptions, Incontenentia Buttox, of 1st century CE Rome, was not a pseudonym. Terd Ferguson, from the same era, was.

[edit] Reasons

Many reasons exist for using or not using a pseudonym. These include:

  • Having thoughtless parents with a surname like Hershlag, who have the nerve to procreate.
  • Dodging taxes - This only works if you are very, very wealthy.
  • Writing books - There really is no reason for this, it's just the cool thing to do.
  • Marriage - It is common for a new bride to temporarily take on the surname of her husband, so God cannot locate her after the divorce.
  • Writing on the internet - Because there's no way in hell you'd ever give out your real name in connection with an article, available to the whole world, referring to a woman called "Incontinentia Buttox".
  • Humor - While "G-String Anal 'Bustamove' Tits McGee" is a great porn name, it's not something I'd put in the yearbook. Until you sign someone else's.
