Rubbers Soul is the 5th album released by The Beatles. At this time in their career, they experimented with drugs. It is a well known history fact that it was Bo Biddley who first introduced the Beatles to marijuana. However, John Lennon and George Harrison took a particular interest into them, smoking inordinary amounts of pot each day. At one point, they started to grow seeds and plants in a cottage in Cambridge. In July 1965, Lennon and Paul McCartney made a visit to their culturation, but since it was raining he decided it would be best to put on his rubber boots. Being completely stoned, he tried to reach for them in his car, but couldn't as he was hallucinating them running away on their own. According to Paul, he stood in the rain, crying out loud: "My rubber boots have soul!" Paul recalled the story later that day to the band, had a laugh and decided that Rubbers Soul would be a great album title. They then rolled another joint and spent the rest of the studio session getting wasted (parts of this particular recording session can be heard in the song What The Fuck)

[edit] Critical Reception

Unfortunately, Brian Epstein forgot to send the master tapes to the factory and this album could not get officially released. One had to London to meet him to receive the album in exchange of sexual favours. Oscar Wilde was the first to review it and acclaimed the album.

The album was still released 4 months after, in November 1965, and was received with confusion at first, since nobody could get past the rubbers boot album cover. Still, critics maintained that this was the most advanced Beatles album so far, as it made a foray into hip-hop with RuN 4 UR L!f3, and talked openly about the male genitalia in Morning Wood (This Turd Has Blown).

It's a little known fact that Brian "Lysergic" Wilson created the 1966 album Pet Sounds by playing Rubber Soul backwards and overdubbing vocals, theremins, orchestras, dog whistles and the lot.
