[edit] City
Scheveningen is not a city, please look for The Hague. When you go to visit Scheveningen, please go to the very famous Pier which is owned by the Van der Valkjes. For only 1 euro you can stay as long as you like to stay. Usually there is a lot of water in Scheveningen, please check the KNMI first before visiting, you might be disappointed.
[edit] The War
Scheveningen is a word that the Dutch invented to tease the Germans during World War II. They made them believe that Scheveningen means Hello or How are you doing, knowing that the Germans had great difficulty pronouncing the word correctly.
Even Hitler, when he visited the Netherlands and appeared on the Dutch television, started his speech with Scheveningen, upon which the whole nation laughed. Not being aware of the real reason of the laughter, he later remarked that he found Holland a very cheerful country.
The trick in pronouncing a word like Scheveningen correctly is, that the Dutch scratch their throats very loudly while they are pronouncing it. Germans are not used to scratching their throats as loudly as the Dutch do while they are talking. Other people, like the English and Americans, will even only do so either before or after they are saying something. It is particularly difficult to utter while huffing a chicken.
[edit] Trivia
- Garri Kasparov, the famous draughts champion, wrote a book about Scheveningen with his trainer, although he neither speaks Dutch nor ever went to Scheveningen. The book was so successful that it was translated into English and published by Batsford. The word "Scheveningen", however, does not appear in the translation.
- The Spanish could pronounce the letter "CH", until they discovered that it was invented by the Dutch, and they hate the Dutch.
