[edit] What is Science Fiction?
I'm sure many of you are wondering what exactly Science Fiction is. You've heard the term, maybe even used the term, but do you really know what makes something science fiction?
Well, I'll tell you. Science Fiction is a way for geeks, dorks, nerds, etc. to make themselves look good. They depict other nerds, usually in far of galaxies, shooting guns and finding hot, scantily clad, green alien women. These are all things that every nerd dreams of. Most good science fiction movies have a cult following. It is loosely based on reality, but a few important changes have been made.
- Being a nerd is cool.
- Aliens and humans can inter-breed
- Saying "Starship" doesn't automatically make you a dork
- Having ridges on your face is trendy
[edit] History
Science Fiction was discovered by Gene Roddenberry in the 1960s. With this brand-new discovery, he invented Star Trek (known in the U.K. as Doctor Who). This was a huge success. Nerds from all over the world gasped as one, as the people that they lived their lives through had amazing adventures on their television.
This wasn't enough for ol' Gene Roddenberry, though. Star Trek had gotten so popular that he decided to bring it to "the big screen." He did this by inventing Star Wars in the 1970s. This was an even bigger success. Costumes and such were popular, and the series made Science Fiction fans everwhere cry with joy.
Gene Roddenberry has continued to amaze geeks everywhere with his Science Fiction. He has made many movies, tv series, books, etc.
[edit] Conventions
Not content to sit in their parents' basements watching Science Fiction alone in their Klingon costumes, the geeks decided to hold meetings. In public. They convinced Gene Roddenberry to trot his stars and producers to conventions across America. This "Gathering of Geeks" featured screenings, sales of semi-naked pictures of Princess Leia, and panel discussions. A panel discussion with Roddenberry crony William Shatner was broadcast live on March 2, 1991 on the sad documentary series Saturday Night Live. The intent of the broadcast was to expose the inner workings of the demented Science Fiction sub-culture, but instead propelled its popularity further. To this day, Science Fiction conventions are still huge draws and are the only reason geeks actually leave their houses.
[edit] Fun Facts
- Nobody but Gene Roddenberry has ever written Science Fiction. Ever.
- Warp speed nine is unattainable. Roddenberry included it in his works as a joke and often derisively laughed at the nerds who believed it was possible.
- 99% of the Internet is controlled by Science Fiction geeks. The remaining 1% ... its inventor Al Gore.
- There is also a religion based on this genre. It's called Scientology.
