“Those fucking whores are nothing without me”
~ Mutya Buena on the Sugababes
“Two words for Amelle... you are shit.
Oh! Actually three”
~ Nadine Coyle on Amelle Berrabah
“We have sex with them in our offices”
~ Tesco head officer on the Sugababes
The Sugababes are a bunch of hookers formed in 1998 by the supermarket chain Tesco in order to promote their brand of sugar after marketers suggested they needed to make sugar "sexier". They have so far, released 14 songs that have made top 40 charts around the world including six UK number one singles. They have also had two UK top five albums - Angels With Dirty, Filthy Underwear in 2002 and Three: The Crappiest Mobile Phone Network in 2003 - and the Number 1 album I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink) in 2005. More recently the band released the compilation CD Not-Loaded-Enough: Most of the Singles Collection. (Also named: Banned From China: The Singles Collection). The band has also won at the Brit Awards for "Best British Morris Dancing Act". A versatile musical group, the girls have managed to find more ways to destroy the concept of music than any other act to date.
[edit] Too Much: The Original Line-Up
Keisha Buchanan (born 30 September 1984) and Mutya Buena (born Rosa Isabel Kinder-Bueno 21 May 1985) were childhood friends in London and met Siobhan Donaghy (known by Buena and Buchanan as Ginger-Nuts, in an affectionate way, of course) at a party when they were thirteen. All three has told their parents they were staying over at friends homes, a lie which was later discovered by The Sun in a sensational expose in 2002. Buchanan's family hails from Jamaica while Buena's comes from the Philippines. Siobhan's family may have lived in a caravan, but no one has, to date, bothered to check that.
The trio, with the help of a lady who worked at the tills in their local Tesco, decided to form a group together soon after meeting, knowing that it was a foolproof way of escaping from their parents tyrannical clutches. London Records decided to offer the group a contract in return for 400 clubcard points. The record company then brought in James Cameron, known for his work on the mega hit movie Titanic to develop an album.
The first single Overload (Your Ears Will Explode) made the UK Top 10 and was nominated for a Brit Award. The Brit Award committee had hoped this would appease the girls into not releasing a follow up. Alas, this plan backfired substantially. Spurred on by their success and shiny, shiny statuette, the group employed a crack team of four monkeys with four typewriters to write their album which had three further Top 40 hits. Despite the creative input from the monkeys (who later found success as cheeky northern songsters, The Arctic Monkeys), the album didn't sell as well as London Records hoped leading to them dropping the band in 2001. James Cameron decried this act as an outrage, and promised to employ the girls to sing the theme song to his next big disaster film, The Making of Heaven's Gate. Meanwhile, to stave off hunger the girls cannibalised Siobhan Donaghy in 2001. Apparently, she tasted like cinnamon.
[edit] Angels With Dirty, Filthy Underwear: New Member & The Rise up again, and again, and again
Heidi Range (born 23 May 1983) from Liverpool replaced the now digested Donaghy in the group as they signed with Island Records. Their first single with the new label was Freak Like Our Friend who is Electric, a bastardised version of Adina Howard's "Freak Like Me" blended with a Braun smoothie maker alongside a sample of "Are Friends Electric" by Tubeway Army. Many hailed the song as a new direction for British Pop Music, while everyone else threw themselves off tower blocks in council estates in despair.
This song was a breakthrough for the group being their first UK number one in 2002 and reaching number two in Ireland. The song was also a European top ten song and reached the top 40 in New Zealand, Norway and Belgium. Their second single for Island Records, Round and Round and Round and Round and Round and Round... was played twenty four hours a day on every radio station for the entire summer of 2002, further cementing their power base.
On the back of these hits, Sugababes' second album Angels with Dirty, Filthy Underwear reached number two on the UK Albums Charts and was a success all over Europe. Minority shareholders in the band, Tesco, proceeded to sell their share in the Sugababes to General Electric for a little over $1.2 billion. As a result of this sale, the band had even more money to invest in marketing their depressingly "edgy" pop tunes.
The third single from the album Stronger (We're On Steroids!) went top ten in the Netherlands and Norway, while a double A-side of Stronger and the album's title track, Angels With Dirty, Filthy Underwear, the theme to The Powerpuff Girls Movie, this went top ten in the UK and Top 20 in New Zealand in late 2002. As a result of this, The Powerpuff Girls Movie was banned in China, with the government citing concerns over the high level of Sugababes moodiness and the associated risk that it might spread to the general public.
The fourth, even more depressing single That's not the Shape, nor is it, My Heart (which samples the Sting "classic" which everyone had tried to forget about, "Shape Of My Heart"), reached number eleven in the UK and was a hit in The Netherlands and Ireland in early 2003. Those crazy Dutch and Irish! The girls topped off their year with a performance of Freak Like Our Friend who is Electric at the Brit Awards where they won the award for "Best British Morris Dancing Act". The award came as somewhat of a surprise, as they were up against rival Morris Dancers, Atomic Kitten and Daniel Bedingfield. The Brit Awards committee, in desperation hoped that this would put a stop to their unholy musical war.
Their success also lead to them recording a special track, entitled Party In The Pub for the theme tune to ITV's teenage drama show Girls In Love based on the book of the same name by Jacqueline Wilson. As a result of this, Girls In Love has also been banned in China
[edit] Three: The Crappiest Mobile Phone Network: Continued growth, a bit like some mould or yeast infection
The group's third album: Three: The Crappiest Mobile Phone Network was released in late 2003 and continued the momentum reaching (an ironic) number three on the UK album charts. This stinging rebuke against a mobile phone network saw the girls first move towards protest music.
The first single Hole In The Ground, a cover of the classic novelty song ("There was a hole, in the middle of the ground, the prettiest hole, that you ever did see") was the group's third UK number one single and went to number one in Denmark as well. Those crazy Danes! It reached number two in Ireland and Norway, went top 10 in Germany, peaked at #25 in Australia and also hit the US Billboard Hot 100, charting at #96, as well as hitting #1 on the US Billboard Dance chart.
The second single Too Lost, Need the Loo, written by Diane Warren and taken from the soundtrack to the UK movie, "Love Actually", went top ten in the UK, Germany and Norway, as well as going top ten in Taiwan. However the single and the movie were banned in China with the Chinese government pleading for the West to "make it stop".
The third single In Some Piddle, a clever continuation from "Too Lost, Need the Loo", went top ten in the UK, top twenty in Ireland and top 40 in Europe and Australia, as well as being nominated for a Brit Award. The fourth and final single to be released from Three: The Crappiest Mobile Network was the ballad, Caught In A Traffic Jam, which reached #8 in the UK, but flopped everywhere else because frankly, everyone was sick of them. The threat of nuclear action from China also lost the Sugababes much of their overseas support.
After taking an enforced break from the music industry, Tony Blair announced that the Sugababes would be returning with a fourth album. This resulted in the tragic destruction of Iceland, due to a badly aimed Chinese nuclear missle. However, Tesco was thrilled at the news, but later discovered that the country and their rivals of the same name are not linked.
[edit] I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink): Their most popular album to date (well, compared to their others)
The group's brand new single Oops... You Pushed The Button was premiered on BBC Radio One in August 2005, with the DJ Chris Moyles.Oops... a song thought by many to be a coded taunt at the Chinese and their nuclear attack was produced by The Dallas Cowboys. It is yet to be seen whether China will retaliate further.
The second single, Ugly was written about Mutya, after so much fanmail had been sent to Keisha, Heidi and even a random girl in the Stronger (We're On Steroids!) video saying how pretty they were. Mutya however, got hate mail, telling her to get her face off the television. Since the release of this single, Mutya left the band, after a good cry in the toilets. This is similar to what Siobhan did, only nobody raided the loo and ate her. She is reported to have gone back to working as Tesco while working on a "solo project".
[edit] I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink, wink): a New Employee
The band contacted a recruitment company, and Amelle, a shelf stacking temp had been drafted in to replace Mutya. The Sugababes' third single from this album was a re-recorded version of Minging Dress and was commercially released in the UK on 6 March 2006, and in April in Europe and Australia. Amelle also re-recorded tracks from I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink) for a re-release of the album.
The so-called "re-release" was quickly put together with Amelle's vocals only appearing on Wanna Be You (a song which Amelle felt summed up her feelings on Mutya), Foller Me 'ome, as well as, Minging Dress, and a bonus track entitled Now You're Gone, Mutya which is included. The reasons for such a poor attempt of a "re-record" was because Mutya paid off the Dallas Cowboys & Island on the basis that she wanted her vocals to remain on the rest of the album because her "solo project" flopped and she still wanted to give people (and China) earache somehow.
In February 2006, I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink) earned a Platinum Award from the IFPI in recognition of over 1 million copies sold in Europe, however the album was banned in China after 1,234 suicides after hearing Ugly. Minging Dress gave the group a third consecutive top 5 hit from the album, entering the UK Single Chart at number four.
In April 2006, the girls won Girl Group With Most Songs Banned In China at the ESKA Music Awards 2006 in Poland. Amelle was happy with this award although she did nothing to contribute to this, in fact they were happy to get rid of Mutya, moody cow.
The fourth and final single from I Betcha' Taller In More Ways (wink, wink, wink) was Foller Me 'ome, released on 5 June 2006. Despite the song featuring new vocals from Amelle, Foller Me 'ome" charted at number thirty-two: the lowest position to date for a Sugababes single. Rumours have it that the song, written by Heidi, was too scouse for the rest of the country to understand. In fact, all the sales were from Liverpool. It also got Amelle banned from China.
[edit] (Almost All of)The Singles Collection
The Sugababes returned during summer 2006 to the record studio to start work with their greatest hits compilation titled Banned From China: The Singles Collection. The lead single from the compilation is titled We're Easy and it made its premiere on 12 September 2006 in Tesco stores all over the country.
The single will be released on 6 November 2006 and the compilation will be released on 13 November 2006. The compilation contains tracks from Too Much to I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink), excluding tracks (Merry Christmas & a Happy) New Year (Not another crappy Card), We're So Sound, Angels With Dirty, Filthy Underwear, and Foller Me 'ome. They were left off the album because they were too crap, to be blunt. They also wrote, well they say "wrote", with the Teletubbies entitiled, Good Mutya's Gone, contrary to the rumours it will not be released - unless the USA sign over Alaska and Hawaii to the UK.
It has been confirmed by Tesco Distribution (the company involved in distributing the compilation) that the greatest hits compilation will be released internationally in every country even China! Even Sudan get it!
[edit] Sugababes Wailing Against Girls Aloud: What a Mess!
To coincide with the charity Comic Relief (and their tour), they decided to record the Aerosmith & Run DMC classic: Walk this Way, to the dismay of China and mostly every other fan. But not only did they want to help with the charity, Girls Aloud wanted to get in on the act (the charitable act) so they worked with the Sugababes' friends The Dallas Cowboys and recorded it. Although reaching number 1 in the UK Top 40, the sales weren't as high as the charity expected so they decided to do it themseleves and ban the song from being played. The last play on UK Radio was on April 1 2007.
Contrary to popular belief the girls do truly hate each other. By the second day of recording the song the record companies had to apply reinforced steel into the walls between the group's studio to prevent any more usage of weapons such as Amelle's dildo (Which seriously harmed Sarah) and Nicola's gingerness (causign partial blindness to both Keisha and Nadine). This conflict meant the two bands refused to work together on the music video and so each band shot their footage separately on different days and then it was joined together with computers.
They are currently embarking on their Almost All The Hits Tour which is to visit the UK, Australia, Europe and some of Asia (but not China).
Many fans believe that the single was meant to be their entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, although no one can really cover up the crap they've already made on the music industry's carpet
[edit] Sugababes 3.0: This Time... Amelle's Angry!
With the screwed up previous single, China once again banned the girls from releasing music. It was thought 3,002,394 people in China suffered severe hearing loss and had gone insane due to the "collaboration".
The girls began to write for their next line-up change or codenamed "First Album with Amelle", the plan was unknown to Buchanan, who remains happy with her fellow bandmates.
To keep her happy, Range and Berrabah convinced Buchanan to get a similar hair cut to Rihanna (and to a lesser extent, that whore from Girls Aloud - Sarah Harding). Although she looked stupid, they gave her a false sense of security by complementing it - all part of their devilish scheme.
They turned to many producers and chose Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman to produce their first single. Entitled: "Fuck Off Mutya, It's Not Always About You Now!" - mostly written by Berrabah (who in turn chose to release the song - after threatening the Record Company that she would punch more people in random nightclubs; fearing for the safety of the public, they agreed).
It uses the exact same sound and production as previous Dr. Quinn songs such as "Since U Been Gone" and "U+Ur Hand" and "4Ever" and "Nothing In This World" and... - well you get the idea... It's a retaliation to Mutya's "Out of Control (Song 4 Mutya)" AKA "Fuck U Sugababes (Dozy Whores)" which was mainly aimed at Berrabah.
It is the first single from the new album "Sugababes 3.0: This Time... Amelle's Angry!". With rumoured tracks such as "Real Girl (part 2)", "Out of Control (Song 4 Amelle) with Cascada", "Strung Out (remix)" & "This is Not Real Love (featuring the cast of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang)".

[edit] Too Much
Too Much was the debut album released by UK girl group Sugababes in December 2000 on London Records. The album produced four Top 30 hits and was their only album with now former (and digested) original member Siobhán Donaghy, and was the only album released by them on London Records.
The album was produced by James Cameron, who produced the first album by All Saints. It was released to some ok reviews, with critics believing that the girls, who were all 16 years old at the time, were all witches due to their writing and singing songs that were considered to be relatively mature for their age - so they were just evil hags in little girls bodies. The album hit a peak position of #26. After a mass procession it was revelead that the girls were indeed not witches.

[edit] Angels With Dirty, Filthy Underwear
Angels With Dirty, Filthy Underwear is the title of the second album by UK girl group Sugababes released in August 2002. Four singles were released from it including Freak Like Our Friend who is Electric and Round and Round and Round and Round and Round..., both of which debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart.
Much to Heidi's dismay, the track Heidi's a Virgin made it to the final cut of the album, although with much arguement, including a mud wrestling match with Keisha, she managed to persuade Island to prevent it being released commercially as a single.

[edit] Three: The Crappiest Mobile Phone Network
Three: The Crappiest Mobile Phone Network is the title of the third album by UK girl group Sugababes in 2003. It has generated four singles to make the charts in various parts of the world with first single Hole in the Ground becoming the group's third UK number one single.
Their third album was also a protest album to the phone network, 3. The album includes the singles plus some special words of advice from the group. The Inlay provided a chart of tarriffs from the well known Phone Networks in the UK and a form which allowed special rights to the owner of a 3 phone to switch with no extra charge.

[edit] I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink)
I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink) is the fourth studio album by UK girl group Sugababes, released on October 10 2005. The first single from it is the Dallas Cowboys produced, Oops... You Pushed The Button. Other contributors on the album, which is mostly produced by the Cowboys, include directors collaborator Steven Speilberg and James Cameron, who co-produced tracks on their debut album, Too Much.
The girls themselves take writing credits on most tracks on the album, writing with the Cowboys, Speilberg, and UK writer and author JK Rowling. UK production team Xenophobia also contribute two songs.
Xenophobia caused mass controversy for the girls who many thought turned to being against other races - although many have discovered that Buchannan and Buena are of different races which disproves the rumours.
The track Joys of Cooking Donaghy confirmed rumours of the fate of their former member. Plus it features their version of the classing song Obsession which was a bastardised version of the song Obsession and More, More, More.

[edit] I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink, wink)
I Betcha' Taller in More Ways (wink, wink, wink) is the re-released edition of the fourth studio album. By adding the additional wink and re-recording only 3 tracks and adding 1 bonus track which was in the reject pile of the original album (with some tiny modifications by Berrabah) the album sold reasonably well.
The song Wanna Be You features a new lyric: Hey everybody I've replaced Mutya sung by Berrabah. In Minging Dress a brand new lyric was included in the very last chroal parts: Cos I'm Cooler than the Minger sung by Amelle. The new song Now You're Gone, Mutya had a new lyric Mutya in each chorus (added by Berrabah herself).

[edit] Not-Loaded-Enough: Most of the Singles Collection
Not-Loaded-Enough: Most of the Singles Collection is a greatest hits compilation album from the Sugababes that released on 13 November 2006. Contrary to initial reports that vocals from departed Sugababes Mutya Buena and (canniblised) Siobhán Donaghy were going to be re-recorded by the newest employee Amelle Berrabah and Donaghy's replacement Heidi Range, but it turned out their new versions sounded awful so all the original vocals were kept for the compilation.
The lead single for the greatest hits is We're Easy and was released 6 November 2006. The Greatest Hits is also known as Banned From China: The FULL Singles Collection
The second single for the greatest hits, Good Mutya's Gone, was expected to be released January 2007 but plans to release the ill-fated single "Walk This Way" (which is what many psychics believe was the rue cause of the sinking of the Titanic), a collaboration with Girls Aloud for Comic Relief was announced and the release was cancelled - also they knew that it was gonna do crap in the charts, however the collaboration did worse than expected (it was shit!).
Singles (Merry Christmas & a Happy) New Year (Not another crappy Card), We're So Sound, Angels with Dirty, Filty Underwear (Double A-side with Stronger (We're on Steroids!)) and Foller Me 'Ome are not included on the collection due the songs being generally crap.
This however caused slight confusion for fans due the fact that (Merry Christmas & a Happy) New Year (Not another crappy Card) charted a little higher than Running Under Covers (Yay We're Ghosts!), and was not included on the release. This might be due to Donaghy's strong presence on the song as Buchanan doesn't really want to delve any further into the past and wants her to be erased from the Sugababes' history - as she was erased from her short stint on their menu.
This also marks the first album since Angels with Dirty, Filthy Underwear for the girls to release and album in China. This was due to negotiations by the UN. However, the group were still banned from entering their soil and boundries. As an added bonus, the country was given a full collection (much to the anger of other countries - the UK and EU are in negotiations for a nuclear attack on China unless they import their version to other terratories).

[edit] 3.0 This Time... Amelle's Angry
3.0 This Time... Amelle's Angry (AKA Changing Line Up... Again) is the fifth studio album by the Sugababes. The album is currently scheduled to be released October 8, 2007.
Mostly written by Amelle (and the rest of the girls). They worked with Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Xenophobia and the Dallas Cowboys.
In special editions there were 4 bonus tracks sung all by Berrabah. Rumours of Berrabah being kicked out of the band circulated prior to the release. It has been confirmed she may get the boot and the girls will move onto version 4.0 (as confirmed by the final 2 bonus tracks).
Tracks 3 and 5 are rumoured to the follow up singles to "...About You Now!" (renamed for comercial purposes).
