The Malay Attitude by Dr.Mahathir
Ok, here's an article taken from the local newspaper, regarding the Malay Attitude, this is a self-criticism NOT RACIST (by Dr. Mahathir the ex. Prime Minister of Malaysia, he is a Malay too). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by DeeVeeDee (talk • contribs)
In an interview published in Mingguan Malaysia yesterday to mark his 21st year as Umno president, Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad lamented the lack of commitment by the Malays to continuously improve their performance despite places and preferences given to them in business and education. Following is an excerpt of the interview by the Utusan Melayu group editor-in-chief KHALID MOHD and journalists ZIN MAHMUD and AZMAN ANUAR.
THE Prime Minister is at his wits’ end about dealing with Malays who will “not let go of their crutches” and those who continue to ask for government subsidies to compete with other races.
- “Actually they are capable. We have seen that if the Malays want to really do something, they would be competent at doing it; whether at acquiring knowledge, doing some work, or other things. They can do anything but the will to excel is lacking,” Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said in an interview with the Malay-language weekly, Mingguan Malaysia. Asked for the reasons for this, he said:
- “I don’t know. We have tried to show the way through examples. Often, immediately on returning from an overseas trip I would rush back to my office – to show I work hard. But there are people who would say, ‘Being a doctor, you can…’ That is their reply,” he said.
In the wide ranging interview which also touched on the English language, the offer to non-bumiputras of places in public institutions of higher learning and the reluctance of Malays to get into private tertiary institutions. The Prime Minister said the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English would start simultaneously at all levels from next year. He, however, refuted suggestions that the move would pave the way for the education system to revert back to the English medium as the identity of the Malays would hinge on the Malay language. Asked if an English-school medium could be introduced, he said if it was made an option, the Malays would not want to learn in Malay and the economic value of the language would fall. He said the job for those implementing the policy now was to resolve problems that exist.
- “It was how we resolved our economic crisis. Everyday, we sit down to discuss how to solve problems,” he said when asked to comment on anxieties voiced about teachers who may not be proficient enough to teach in English.
On whether recent events point to a gradual erosion of the Malays’ special rights, Dr Mahathir said he did not think so but such rights should not be regarded as crutches.
- “If we can be rich, can buy property now owned by the Chinese and others, can be smarter than the Chinese, what then would be the use of the special Malay privileges? The Chinese in Malaysia do not have such special rights. They face discrimination. But they are more successful than we are.”
Dr Mahathir said he often asked the Malays to emulate the prowess of Datuk Azhar Mansor, who made a solo boat journey around the world, to learn about confidence building. However, he added, whenever a Malay meets Azhar he would ask the adventurer what “type” of charm he used.
- “They think Azhar needs to carry a magic charm to sail around the world,” he said.
Dr Mahathir said when the Malays were fighting against the Malayan Union, they had a common platform. They were weak and feared that they would lose everything they had.
- “We are not going to give away everything now. We would give away only 10% to test the Malays’ capability,” he said, referring to a recent announcement that the Government would open places for non-bumiputras in Mara Junior Science Colleges. He said he was told that Tunku Abdul Rahman College was willing to open its doors to bumiputras but there were no takers. Even when scholarships were offered to bumiputras to enrol in TAR College, they were reluctant to go there. Their reason was that there were too many Chinese students who were purportedly smarter than the Malay students, Dr Mahathir said.
On claims that the reluctance of Malays to study in private institutions of learning was due to the lack of prayer facilities and the fear that they would be served non-halal food, he said:
- “In that case, there is no need to send them overseas. In England, it is not likely there would be a surau at Cambridge or Nottingham University. Can we ascertain that all food are slaughtered (the Islamic way); that they will not be served pork? What other excuses do they want to give?” he asked.
Dr Mahathir lamented that despite all that he had done to boost the Malays’ confidence – showing leadership by example, giving guidance, scolding, crying and offering prayers – their shortcomings were still there.
- “If we look at project sites, we have to ask ourselves why is it that there is not a single Malay working ‘Time to become self-reliant’ in construction projects. Are Malays so much different from the Javanese or Sumatrans working so hard there? They work till night. It is not that because we have brown-coloured skin, we cannot work. It is the culture. We do not know hardship and want it to be easy all the time. Going a bit higher makes us dizzy. Working longer makes us tired and so strained that we cannot sleep,” he said.
Dr Mahathir said while there had been improvements within the party and among the Malays, negative elements had crept in and caused targets of the New Economic Policy to go astray and attitudes as well as values among the community to dwindle. He said while the target was for the Malays to control 30% of the national economy, for a while it touched 20% but was now hovering at about 19% only. Of this percentage, he said 17% involved bumiputra institutions managed by the Government while the other 2% was the actual portion controlled by bumiputra entrepreneurs.
- “Not that we have not given them anything. If we are to take into account what we have given to the bumiputras, it would exceed 30%. However, most had been sold back. That is why we cannot meet our target. Our people (the Malays) wants quick money. Selling would reap quick profits. To save means not to enjoy (the benefits),” he said.
The Prime Minister said the Malays must now think for themselves.
- “I have shown them what they should do, but they are still in need of crutches, subsidies, privileges.”
Asked if the Malays would change their ways if these subsidies and privileges were taken away from them, Dr Mahathir said:
- “We have said to them before. For example, we may allow 10% of places to non-bumiputra students in Mara Junior Science Colleges and matriculation programmes yet our people are not up to it. We want to be surrounded by a fortress that prevents other people from coming in. Tomorrow, if we are forced to leave the fortress, we will not be able to do battle with others,” he said, pointing out that the Malays do not look like they are ready to compete (with others) without government assistance.
- “We think that being given special treatment by the Government is a noble thing. Actually, it is not a noble deed. If, in the country, we expect to be given protection all the time, the situation is similar to that faced by the Red Indians who needed to be protected because they were too weak. This too would make us weak,” he said.
The Prime Minister said a probable cause of the lethargy within the Malay community is politics.
- “There are people who – when we try do something right – will threaten through political means not to support the Government. In a political democracy, that’s how it is. When we try to do something right, good or which would hurt a little, there will be people saying that it’s all part of the political issue. For example, for a long time now I had told our people to learn English, not for it to replace Malay but just for them to learn English. But the matter was turned into an issue so huge that we find it difficult to implement it now. Today, we realise that English has indeed become important. Likewise, other fields of knowledge that I had been harping about for over 30 years. Yet, some quarters said that it is all secular, political. The worst of them is PAS. PAS only waits for us to do something and turns it into a political issue so that good things too will not be achieved.”
Asked whether the Malays were still stuck with the “old mentality” of being just satisfied with basic needs of food, clothing and shelter, Dr Mahathir said:
- “All right … if they have enough food, enough clothes … there is no need to make so much noise. What is there to politicise about? Yet we still hear the noise. We want this and that.”
He said he was far from satisfied about how the Malays had progressed. As an analogy, he said if all the Chinese were taken out of Kuala Lumpur; including their homes and buildings, there would be nothing else left in the city but Kampung Baru.
- “After 44 years of Independence all we have is Kampung Baru. The tall buildings belong to government agencies. Just think about it.”
On whether the 10% quota for non-bumiputras would be made permanent, Dr Mahathir said he was not in a position to give any guarantee as it would be decided in the future where
- “I may not be around anymore”.
The Umno president said he had failed, as head of the party, to bring about a change in the Malay attitude.
- “Umno, too, sometimes become spoilt because too many people are grabbing positions."
The NEP to make Malays rich
An article by Dr. Mahathir. (Asian Political News, June 24, 2002)
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday defended his country's affirmative action policy but warned ethnic Malays that their rights and privileges are far from being safe.
- The Malays are clearly far from being safe. Do not think that the power of the Malays in the political arena is permanent, that it will guarantee the safety of the Malays forever, the 76-year-old premier said in a two-hour speech to open the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) annual assembly.
If the special status of the Malays, or bumiputeras as they are also known, is challenged today, he said, Malays will not be able to survive.
- They are not prepared to face any competition at all. They are so afraid of the other communities. Without the experience of competing with others, if the protection is suddenly withdrawn, they will not be able to survive, Mahathir, also UMNO president, said.
As head of the party that deems itself the custodian of Malay culture, Mahathir put his newly gained political fortune on the line recently when he dared to pry open the three-decade-old New Economic Policy (NEP) to provide more opportunities for non-Malays, although only in education.
The NEP, Malaysia's affirmative action policy, guarantees Malays 30% corporate equity, easy credit, contracts and projects from the government and places in public universities.
The policy, which came about following the 1969 clashes between the poorer, rural Malays and the economically more dominant ethnic Chinese, is now called the National Vision Policy.
Recently Mahathir stirred up a controversy by changing the race-based quota system for university entrance to a merit-based one. Then he ordered 10% of places to be allocated to non-Malays in government-run colleges and that English, instead of the national language, Malay, be used to teach science and mathematics.
Malay nationalists are up in arms crying treachery.
But Mahathir is adamant, saying the NEP has made Malays lazy and prone to rely on the easy way and the quick way.
- Because of that, when licenses are given, they sell the licenses...No work is done other than to be close to people with influence and authority in order to get something because they are Malays, he told the 2,000 delegates attending the three-day assembly.
- Truly I am ashamed to expose all these, especially in front of the other people, in front of the whole nation and the world. But they all already know all these. I am not exposing anything that they don't know, he said.
Mahathir expressed his disappointment that after 21 years at the helm of the country he has failed to change the Malay mindset.
- Mostly I feel disappointed, disappointed because I achieved too little result from my principal task -- the task of making my race a successful race, a race that is respected, a race that is honorable, a race that is highly regarded. I beg your pardon because I have failed, he said.
But despite his criticism of Malays and their over-dependence on government assistance, Mahathir defended the benefits of the NEP although he said it has slowed down national development.
- What slowed down the national development was because the government had to try and try again to balance the economy of the Malays against that of the non-Malays at all levels and in all fields, he said.
But the NEP, he said, has succeeded in closing the gap between the Malays and non-Malays.
Those who condemned the NEP, he said, have ignored the fact that government scholarships and opportunities have allowed thousands of Malay children to enter universities.
The government has also provided 3 billion ringgit (about $789 million) as capital for the National Equity Corp. (NEC), a government investment arm, to initiate unit trusts which succeeded in making 7.28 million Malays shareholders in big corporations with investments totaling 34.89 billion ringgit.
The shares allocated to the NEC were the result of the restructuring of new companies that are required by the NEP to provide 30% of their equity for bumiputera.
- In truth, without the NEP, the unit trusts and the governmental institutions which were managed on behalf of the Malays, today the NEP would achieve only 2% of the target, Mahathir said.
- ^ malays are a bunch of stupid retarded asshole. no discussion on that. it is facts --matrempit 11:41, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Trimming the article/Increasing Lulz to Word ratio
I this article (while already very funny) can be further improved by trimming it and adding more lulz. For example the first half of the Telecommunications in Malaysia section is long but is barely funny at all. Same goes for the History of Malaysia section. What do you guys think?
I also think that we should add a section about the 'invasion' of Indonesians/Pakistanis. We can use many illegal immigration jokes parallel to the US/Mexico situation.-Starscream 0130, June 17 2007

Too many stupid things
I used to enjoy reading the Malaysia page but currently it's getting a little to saturated with stupidity than humour.
The religion part especially is getting really stupid. It's sounding more insulting day by day rather than satirically humourous. Religion is an especially sensitive subject and I suggest that it be handled with some dignity.
Another thing is the horrible spellings. It's good when done correctly but it's horrifying they way it is now. Please try to spell things correctly. It gives people a better opinion and makes the article look better.
Furthermore, this article and page is for laughs and jokes and not for people to vent their anger at the Malaysian government, people, culture, etc.
I suggest a revamp of this article to clear out some of those things.
