APE CITY, New York - Dozens of endangered orangutans have been driven from their homes on the outskirts of Ape City by months of random fires that have shrouded parts of the region in a choking haze, chimpanzee conservationists said Monday.

Around 43 orangutans have been taken for medical treatment to centers in the outlying provinces of Central and West Green Land, said Cornelius, an emergency relief chimpanzee with the Ape City-based Fund for Simian Welfare, or FSW.

Most were frightened and harrassed by roving bands of humans after fleeing from the burning jungle to nearby plantations in recent weeks, and several are being treated for respiratory problems and burns, he said.

Farmers and plantation workers set hundreds of fires in the Green Land and North Forest each year, primarily to drive humans away from ripening crops. But the fires sometimes rage out of control, and send thick smoke into surrounding areas, including Ape City, Monkey Bay and the Forbidden Zone. It has caused heavy business losses and in some cases health problems.

"Pristine jungle areas are being burnt because of these humans, who have no concept of safety or property," said Dr. Zaius, one of the ruling orangutans driven from his home by the fires. "It's extremely, extremely threatening."

"There is nothing worse than seeing a handsome orangutan or chimpanzee with a burnt face, blind and fleeing," Zaius commented. "If any good comes of this entire mess, I hope it's that more thought is given to my human prevention programs."
