A travesty for democracy today as a popular movement in France successfully overturned a law which they disliked. Monsieur N. Om-bete, a member of the French Assemblée Nationale (for the Partie Tenir-En arrière-Habiller-Stupide-Et-Regarder-Stupide) , told us "This is a disgrace. People these days don't know how to sit down and shut up. Frankly, if we're going to bend over backwards to accommodate the wishes of some stupid populace, we may as well go the whole bloody hog and let them choose who makes the law. Erm."
The protesters, dubbed "filthy student bastards who steal our taxes" by cab drivers and right-wing newspapers the world over, were jubilant today, as plans went ahead for a march down the Rue de la Constitution, and perhaps a movie later.
The government is expected to pursue its original plan B, vis. relaxing a bit, and accepting that on the principle that all work and no play makes Jacques a dull boy, full employment was never that great an idea in the first place.
