[edit] checkuser error on zh-tw

Dear carlb,

User:Hant has performed a checkuser in zh-tw, but occured an error message "CheckUser::doUserIPsRequest" MySQL error "1072: Key column 'cuc_user_ip_time' doesn't exist in table (oscar)". May you check for this? If you need to test the checkuser function, you may test on leeyc0 account at zh-tw, that's mine. --Leeyc0 02:19, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

This should be working now. --Carlb 07:16, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Timezone problem in Japan

Good morning Carlb. I am an Uncyclopedian in Japan. Currently, Japanese uncyclopedia has a jet lag. If I write date/time signature (~~~~~), timezone is JST, but date/time is still UTC.

~~~~~ should expand as:
2008年2月17日 (日) 00:16 (JST)
But currently, it expand as:
2008年2月16日 (土) 15:16 (JST)
Date/time is subtracting 9 hours from JST (JST is 9 hours ahead of UTC). What is happening? What time is it now? Thank you, good night. --話切徒 16:19, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
It is now 2008年2月17日 (日) 12:16 (JST) - do you know where your MediaWiki 1.12alpha revision level is? :) Carlb 22:18, 16 February 2008 (EST)
I'm sorry about response time lag. The jet lag has cured. Thanks! Should I have checked the MediaWiki revision before asking you? I have not checked the revision. sorry. --話切徒 13:46, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
The error appears to have been a bug in MediaWiki; when the server was updated to the new version, the time appeared correctly. --Carlb 22:51, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Deleted pages and absolute deletion
Sorry that I bother you with this silly question, but are you the only admin of the two Hikipedia servers? Can only you complete an absolute deletion, that even administrators can't undo? And my real question is, that will someone delete old crap articles completely? I am asking this just because there are some deleted pages in Hikipedia that I personally would like to keep somewhere. Thanks. --Crea(te)dit 18:15, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
As far as I know, any deletions done by the admins can be undone. The information is still in the database; it's just hidden from view. --Carlb 04:28, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I knew that. I am just asking do you know will anyone anytime complete an absolute deletion... ? --Crea(te)dit 13:13, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
No, deleted text can be undeleted. --Carlb 22:51, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Korean Uncyclopedia server migration
We have planned Korean Uncyclopedia's server migration, mostly due to slow connection speed(100MBps+ Internet is ubiquitous in Korea, even Gigabit LAN services are now available in Korea) and stability. We made a new server and tested about several weeks, now it's time to migrate all the data, including user and article database and media files. I sincerely request to lock Korean Uncyclopedia's database in March 9 00:00 UTC or later, and gave us a dump of user and article database, media files. I will notify about server's new IP and domain soon. Thank you. --Peremen 12:12, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry. The plan was delayed because of some troubles. However, we still have plan and I'll notify about that soon. --Peremen 16:01, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
If you have your own server, I think that it would be easiest to transfer ownership of 백괴사전.org to you instead of registering a new domain (although both options are easily possible}. Other addresses could be configured on domain servers here to be merely aliases (ie: ko.uncyclopedia.info. CNAME 백괴사전.org).
The dump of media files is on http://download.uncyc.org as is the article text. Any images on commons.uncyclomedia.org which you are using in 백괴사전.org articles will need to be copied into the local wiki. I could have this done by some sort of 'bot if you wish. The full SQL dump (which has the deleted articles and the userlist) is not on download.uncyc.org but could be made available to you if you need it.
Let me know once you're ready. --Carlb 16:21, 1 March 2008 (UTC) (carlb at kingston net}
[edit] Recent changes list
(In Hikipedia) Is it possible to hide all checked changes on the recent changes list? Checking would become much much easier. --Black Eagle 22:26, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Yes. Click "piilota tarkastetut muutokset" at the top of the recent changes list to hide patrolled revisions. --Carlb 22:51, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok I think I'm getting blind... (I mean thank you!) --Black Eagle 05:33, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Extensions
Hello again, Carlb. Would it be possible to install the Widgets extension with the "report a problem"-widget on Ikkepedia.org? It would make it a lot easier for us to find vandalism and other problems, since most of our visitors don't have enough knowledge about wikicode to insert the templates we've made for reporting problems. --Trubadurix 18:39, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Lately we've had problems creating User talk pages, so we can't welcome new users. Also our Special:Nuke page is no longer available. --Trubadurix 21:28, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
User talk and nn:special:nuke should be working now.
I don't see any information for the widget extension that you mentioned, at least not anything saying where to get individual widgets for that extension which could be used on MediaWiki. --Carlb 04:34, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll try to find out more about the widget extension. I know Uncyclopedia and the abandoned Ikkepedia version has the widget, maybe it's a wikia thing. --Trubadurix 08:50, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Sorry to bother you
I always regret that I have no better things to say, except to complain all the time. So this time:
Hi! How are you doing? There has been some mysterious lagging lately and some pictures don't work. (Well there was the complain... =( ) Do you happen to know anything about this? Black Eagle 19:06, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Well now the whole Hikipedia is down... Black Eagle 19:24, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Now everything is under control, except some of the images don't show properly. Black Eagle 21:10, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
A few of the problem images appear to be .BMP's that have been saved under non-.BMP names: Halko.png, Mylaf.jpg, MIkiii.jpg, Nallekarkit.jpg, Mikkisuurinn.jpg, Ahterin_kunta.png, Röhmöfantti.jpg, Donuts-spread2.jpg, KenraaliSanttu.jpg, Tyypillinenlehmä.jpg, OOO.jpg, Pim.jpg, Pukki.jpg, Leppis.gif, Vaakis.jpg, Murneli.jpg, Nimetön.jpg, Ei_tyttö.jpg, Leppiskrt.gif, Spiritism.jpg, Bush_idols.jpg, Hätänium.jpg, Jasso_sami.jpg, Merihirvio.jpg, Universumi.jpg and KumiankkaSaalistamassa.jpg. These are affected by this bug.
These were the only ones that I couldn't get to display properly just by going to the image description page and clicking the 'refresh' (päivitä) tab. The rest appear to be valid. --Carlb 04:25, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
I see. But there are still some pictures; this for example. Have they removed this or something? Black Eagle 05:14, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] different behaviour between zh.uncyclopedia.info and uncyclopedia.tw
Dear carlb, I just discovered that the namespace table between these 2 domains acted differently, even though they seems to have same namespace configuration. For example, there is a template named 範本:SOS團列表, and it can be accessed from http://zh.uncyclopedia.info/wiki/%E7%AF%84%E6%9C%AC:SOS%E5%9C%98%E5%88%97%E8%A1%A8, but not from http://uncyclopedia.tw/wiki/%E7%AF%84%E6%9C%AC:SOS%E5%9C%98%E5%88%97%E8%A1%A8. Seems that uncyclopedia.tw doesn't recognize that 範本: is a namespace prefix. May you have a check for it? --Leeyc0 09:34, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
For me both worked well. Black Eagle 20:46, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Request changes for th.uncyclopedia.info
Hi! I would like to ask you to kindly make couple of minor changes. First, we would prefer w: shortcut to reference to th.wikipedia.org instead of English one. Secondly, we would like to use time in Thailand and Thai year as in Thai Wikipedia, which basically is UTC+7, and for the information on Thai year, you can see here: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11657 Thanks! --Jutiphan 22:50, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
You have MediaWiki 1.13 (which contains all bug fixes up to Feb 2008) and พิเศษ:Interwiki (which would allow you to remove the old w: shortcut and create a new one). I've changed the timezone, but I don't think there's anything else that requires me to intervene here. Thanks --Carlb 23:56, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
That was quick. Thank you very much for the changes. Thai Wikipedia took weeks if not more for such changes. --Jutiphan 02:22, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Internet adress
Something changed. There used to be two content-identical adresses to Hikipedia:
http://hiki.pedia.ws/wiki/page_example and
http://hikipedia.info/wiki/page_example.
Now there is only this http://hikipedia.info/wiki/page_example
Are you aware of this change? --Black Eagle 09:00, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm seeing fi.uncyclopedia.info and some others as a redirect to hikipedia.info, and hikipedia.ws or hiki.pedia.ws as aliases with the same content. Peelonet no longer links to Hikipedia at all, and unfortunately nothing on hikipedia in domains .com .net .org but linkspam. :( --Carlb 17:13, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
What on earth? I tried a few days ago to go to hiki.pedia.ws but when it loaded the page I think it somehow redirected because I got to this hikipedia.info. Mysterious. Well, can you explain why those sites have the same content but different adress? And why there are two adresses anyway? Black Eagle 20:45, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] The close down of Simplified Chinese Uncyclopedia
Today, the Simplified Chinese Uncyclopedia (zh:) reported to us (Traditional Chinese Uncyclopedia (zh:tw)) that she would be closed down on April 4th 2008. We need to make changes on our language links this week.--Hant 00:03, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
As far as I know, zh:/zh-tw: have been returning nothing but blank pages since at least last year in the PRC, and en: is now also affected. There may be other Uncyclopedias and many Wikipedia projects blocked as well. As such, I doubt that anyone will notice Simplified 伪基百科's demise, if and when it occurs. Simply deleting the zh: link from zh-tw:Special:Interwiki will leave a mess of red links, so it's probably best to wait until Simplified is actually gone and then have a robot remove the links from the articles.
The links from Wikia-hosted versions are a bit more problematic; we seem not to have a robot active here now that Qscgu9-bot has been banned at least once on en: as well as de:. There's also the problem that we have no access to update the interwiki table here; Forum:Interwiki links is a list of what currently has been awaiting update since October. Still, zh: disappearing is normal (it happened before with the uncyclopedia.wikiachina.cn debacle) so I doubt anyone would notice anything out of the ordinary. Might be best just to ignore it? --Carlb 11:37, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
The Simplified Chinese Uncyclopedia (zh:) reported to us (Traditional Chinese Uncyclopedia (zh:tw)) that it would not be closed down on April 4th 2008. As you say, we have done nothing in this moment. Everything just remain the same.
But I don't think English Uncyclopedia would use it's 'close down' to make a joke on April 1st. The Simplified Chinese Uncyclopedia is now mostly contributed by one or two of its sysops, who are also active in the Traditional Chinese Uncyclopedia. Do they think about if Wikia know its intention to close down? It may come truth! --Hant 22:52, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Hi,
Hymie is correcting the interwiki Mol every time: es:Mol , fr:Mole , pt:Mol . But the correct translation is: es:Topo (red link), fr:Taupe and pt:Toupeira ...
VSOTVEP-TALK-Image:22px-Flag_of_Netherlands.pngI'mDutch 20:40, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Ouch, there must be 6.02 x 1023 different meanings for "mol" and "mole", no wonder this doesn't work... --Carlb 23:49, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Your concerns regarding the sysops at Uncyclopedia
They are mostly grounded in solid fact, but I think you may be missing the pulse of the wiki which you get when you deal with primarily onwiki issues as opposed to offwiki issues (a job which I greatly admire and don't in any way envy ;). What I mean by this is that, yes, we aren't growing at nearly the rate we were growing when I first joined. Hell, I joined at the END of the bubble, the burst, the surge; whatever term you want to use, that time has long gone. We're getting to a point now where it's less about letting the bubble grow, and more about making sure the surface tension doesn't cause it to asplode. That overwrought metaphor is meant not to make me seem more pompous than I already am, but rather to help express my belief that growth != progress. Let me tell you what I mean.
Wikipedia is an ever-growing wiki in which thousands of edits are made literally every second of every day. They've grown well past 2 million articles and are fast on the way to 2.5 and eventually 3 million. That's all well and good, if not for the fact that every day the very users who made Wikipedia what it was/is become more and more disillusioned with what it's become. I point to the developer of AutoWikiBrowser and the vigilance barnstar dude as examples of what happens when this occurs.
I fear every day that more and more people are coming to this point on this wiki. All the time, it's one long and drawn-out argument after another making absolutely no progress. This guy even made a comment on the Manticore op thingamajig.
You might be asking yourself, "Why the hell did this guy come to my talk page to ramble?" I'm getting there, don't fear. You have some well-founded concerns. I find myself reverting reverts all the time, and it's annoying. But such is life. People make mistakes. Sometimes pages that shouldn't be deleted are deleted. We may lose a user, even. This isn't desirable, but it's certainly not worth losing sleep over. Look, I know that you have the wiki's best interests at heart as much as I or anyone else, but sometimes I fear that when a user like you, with such a long, illustrious history at Uncyc (2nd only to MadMax in contribs) only comes back every so often to voice dissent in a forum, it adds to the problem rather than helping toward a solution.
That's my piece. I say it with the utmost respect and without indictment, just a simple statement that sometimes the best way to improve quality is to improve morale, and morale doesn't improve when people come back just to say we're doing it wrong. Even if it is true.
And there you have it. It only took me 3,000 characters to say.~~ Sir Ljlego, GUN  [talk] 00:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
I don't think I have what could be called "a long, illustrious history" here. Most of my edits are from ages ago, starting May 2005 (back before Uncyclopedia had any additional languages or any ties with Wikia) and ending soon after Chron sold the domain in July 2006. Most of my involvement since then has been with the Uncyclopedia Babble Project, where I somehow managed to rack up 3000 edits on pt:, a language in which I am dangerously dependent on Babblefish to understand anything. Mostly reverts of page/section blanking and categorisation of templates. Even here, many of these edits are trivial - moving pages to Babel:, adding categories to pages and templates which had none and minor maintenance tasks done long ago. Don't be fooled. :)
Sure, to some extent I do believe in the whole "don't bite the n00bs" concept - and the thirty-plus-years bans being handed out can be a bit excessive. I'm not saying Wikipedia is better or worse, they are becoming a mess of bureaucratic policies and out-of-control robots who have nothing better to do than mislabel user-created images and content as plagiarism and delete it. Still, I am getting tired of having to explain why sysops of other Uncyclopedia languages are being banned here for 'infinite' (which has happened at least once) or why entire entire countries and states are being CVP'ed. Sometimes we do delete a marginal but not unsalvageable page, only to see utter rubbish take its place. That usually leads, a few deletions and re-creations later, to the CVP bin. I do still have interwiki.py robots running on most non-Wikia in the Uncyclopedia series, and am having these constantly prompt asking whether a link to a perfectly-valid topic that should exist here should be pulled as it now links across namespaces (to CVP). And yes, quite often they does seem to be creating inbound links to Wikia pages that don't link back.
Que sera, sera, je suppose. It's all largely out of my hands at this point. --Carlb 10:53, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
