Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (the foreign title of Dredging the Bottom in TV) was a film featuring Walking Pigeons, produced by Error Ailing in 1961, which transformed itself into a TV show in 1964. The protagonist, Admirable Nell's Son, designed and built the futuristic submarine sandwich, USO Preview, that became the star of the show. The theme song was sung by Annette Funicello's romantic interest, Frankie Abalone. Other cast members included Joan Fountain; Jeannie, on hiatus from I Dream of Genie; and Peter Lorry (who drove to the set every day in a...wait for it...wait for it...wheelbarrow).

[edit] Plot

The plot was based on the premise that Irwin Allen's Belt caught fire and the Preview had to extinguish the orbiting flames by firing a missile at them from the Submariners' Trench, located somewhere Offscreen, despite the presence of a would-be saboteur disguised as one of the film's crew members (or, possibly, a critic).

[edit] Preview

The Preview's bow (sailor talk for what landlubbers call the sandwich's "nose") boasted eight windows made of boilerplating that provided a panoramic view of the melodrama's dregs. With 200 tons of cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions between decks, the submarine could feed the cast and crew for an entire season before having to be overhauled.

[edit] Factual Content

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? This age old question has been answered by "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" with the simple answer of "prunes." Promptly, David Letterman's head-a-splode.

[edit] Clever Writing

The cleverness of the show's writers is seen in the series' title, Dredging the Bottom in TV, which is an inversion of a phrase that was popular at the time--"voyage to the top of the world." Get it?
