The Open Source Vulnerability Database [1], or OSVDB, is an inappropriately named source of information about various software features. Many supporters of OSVDB claim it provides freely available information regarding computer software vulnerabilities. However, in truth the organization is actually a clever self-promotion tool used by members to convince would-be employers that they contributed to something worthwhile, selfless, and community oriented.

[edit] Origin

During the dark years of computer hacking, a small band of cleric coders gathered in a small and non-descript hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada for the annual DefCon hacker convention. However, in a drug and alcohol induced state, the reformed hackers had a Martin Luther-like revelation, in which they declared to the other attendees that they would no longer allow powerful and arcane computer vulnerability information be controlled by the elite and powerful Popes and Cardinals of hacking. They declared they would publish the knowledge for the masses. During the first year, the effort had incredible momentum resulting in the distribution of 18 stickers, 7 flyers, and a t-shirt.

[edit] OSF

OSF is the non-profit arm of OSVDB, used to launder and funnel financial instruments. The name OSF was used to confuse would-be donation providers into thinking they were donating to the Open Software Foundation which had long used the OSF name. In truth however, the OSF organization to which donations were going was actually the Open Security Foundation. The clever ruse proved worthless however, as it was later learned that the reason the Open Software Foundation no longer existed, was that nobody donated money to them either.
